U.S. House Democrats Attempt to Force Vote for Mandatory Home Gun Storage
Rep. DelauroU.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and a group of U.S. House of Representatives Democrats announced they filed a discharge petition on a mandatory home gun storage bill to attempt a forced floor vote. Rep. DeLauro wants to force the vote on H.R. 660, a bill she introduced in January that would make it a crime for gun owners who do not lock a gun if a minor can access it without permission. A discharge petition is a procedural maneuver designed to force votes over the objection of the majority, The Hill reported. Often unsuccessful, the gambit needs a majority of House members’ signatures to bring the legislation for a floor vote. The Democrats have filed several discharge petitions on several gun control measures recently, facing an uphill climb in the Republican-led chamber. The legislation would violate the U.S. Supreme Court’s Heller decision that struck down the Washington, D.C., mandatory storage law as unconstitutional. NSSF encourages voluntary storage with a method that best works for owners when firearms are not in use. NSSF opposes one-size-fits-all mandates.
